How the flag actually happens

Nobody at the company reviews your application and decides it came from a robot. The decision happens earlier, at the edge, in milliseconds, and it is mostly arithmetic. Cloudflare scores every request from 1 to 99, where 1 means near certainty that the request was automated and 99 means near certainty that a human sent it. Anything from 1 to 29 falls in the automated bands, and a site can block or challenge on that score by itself.

One of the cheapest inputs to that score is the address. Amazon Web Services publishes every range it owns as a single file: 10,661 IPv4 prefixes and 6,158 IPv6 prefixes on the day we checked. Google Cloud publishes 1,092 more. Recognizing a data center is therefore not clever detection work, it is a lookup that anyone can run for free, and it is already built into the products sitting in front of most application forms. Residential addresses are not on those lists, because there is no list to be on.

That is the whole thesis. We did not find a trick that beats bot detection. We moved the software to the one place that was never suspicious to begin with.

Do employers actually block applications from cloud servers?+

The honest answer is that you rarely find out. Bot management scores a request before an ATS ever sees it, and a low score can be blocked or challenged silently. What is verifiable is the input: cloud providers publish the address ranges they own, so a request from one is trivially identifiable as coming from a data center rather than a home.

Is a local Mac applier slower than a cloud one?+

In practice the ceiling is the same, because the limit is how many relevant jobs exist, not how much compute you can rent.
